Using biometrics in our banking app

Biometrics use fingerprint or face recognition to confirm your identity.

There are 2 types you can use, which work together:

For everyday banking: device biometrics

If you set up face or fingerprint recognition on your device, you can:

  • Log in to our banking app.
  • Authorise small and repeat payments in our banking app and internet bank.
  • Verify your identity when you log in to the internet bank.

For extra security: account biometrics

Setting up account biometrics in our banking app gives you an extra layer of security for sensitive requests. For example, bigger payments and resetting your passnumber.

With account biometrics, you won’t need your card reader or debit card to log in or make payments.

Account biometrics are:

  • easy to set up and use
  • convenient
  • as secure as your card reader
  • built to work alongside your device biometrics.

Note:

You may still need your card reader for certain tasks in the internet bank.


How do account biometrics work?

When you set up account biometrics, our banking app takes a photo of your face.

We partner with a specialist organisation called Mitek. With your consent, your photo is sent to Mitek, and a unique biometric map of your facial features is made.

Later, if we need to double-check it’s you, we’ll ask for another photo. Mitek compares it to your stored map – instantly confirming it’s you.

Keeping your personal information safe

We take your privacy and security seriously – using your information only when needed, and always keeping it protected.

When you set up account biometrics, we securely store the photo you provide. And ask you to update it every 2 years to keep your details current.

Mitek uses this photo to create a secure digital map of your face. The photo is deleted within 7 days and only the encrypted biometric map is kept – never the image itself.

How to set up account biometrics in our banking app

If you haven’t already set up account biometrics in our banking app, follow these steps.

Find Remove the card reader

  • Navigate to your Home screen.
  • Tap the Profile icon in the top right of your screen.
  • Find Remove the card reader.

If you can’t see Remove the card reader and you’ve only just opened your account, you may have to wait a bit longer.

Get ready to take your selfie

Find a plain background and well-lit space to take a photo of your face.

Have your account card and card reader handy, just this once, for set up.

Tap the Get started button.

Note: you may need a card reader for this step.

Take your photo and submit

Follow the following instructions on how to take your photo:

  • have a plain background

  • make sure your face is well lit

  • keep your face in the oval

  • don’t wear dark glasses

  • do not cover your face with anything.

Once you’re happy with your photo, you can submit.
