Helping those who have been dealt an unfair hand

Life can deal people an unfair hand at any time. We witness that with our own customers, young and old.

Nationwide Fairer Futures will help tackle 4 of the biggest issues we see in society today — youth homelessness, families living in poverty, people living with dementia and people affected by cancer.

Working with Action for Children, Centrepoint, Dementia UK and The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, we’ll make a difference across generations to some of the most disadvantaged people in our communities.

How do we help?

Each year Nationwide gives 1% of its profits before tax to good causes. This is split between the Nationwide Fairer Futures programme and the Nationwide Foundation, an independent charity which aims to increase the availability of decent, affordable homes for people in housing need.

Nationwide Fairer Futures enables our employees to support these partnerships or other charities close to their heart — whether through fundraising or volunteering — using up to 14 hours of paid leave each year.

You can find out how our previous grants, colleague involvement and charity donations have helped local communities across the UK in our social impact report.

Our charity partners

We've chosen to partner with 4 brilliant charities for Nationwide Fairer Futures. Each is a leader in its area, working hard to make a difference to people across the UK.

Action for Children - helping families living in poverty

30% of all children in the UK are living in poverty. No child deserves to grow up hungry and cold.

Being cold, tired and hungry can damage education, friendships and mental health and disrupt children’s life chances. The charity helps families through crisis, and fights for an end to child poverty.

Our aim

100,000 children, young people and parents living in poverty or experiencing financial hardship will be given practical and emotional support. Our aim is to provide a lifeline for those in desperate need, enrich the lives of children and help families improve their situations.

Centrepoint - tackling youth homelessness

Every four minutes, a young person aged 16 - 24 faces homelessness.

Every young person deserves to have a safe place to call home where they can rebuild their life and move on to a bright, independent future.

Our aim

3,500 homeless young people will be supported to take steps towards independence and a home of their own. Our aim is to enable them to have a home where they feel safe, where they belong and where they can rebuild their lives.

Dementia UK - helping those with dementia

1 in 2 people will be affected by dementia in their lifetime.

Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nursing charity. Its specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide free, tailored advice and support to help families care for their loved one and ensure no one faces dementia alone.

Our aim

100,000 people living with dementia and their carers will be supported through specialist care and guidance. Our aim is to empower people to have the best life possible, for as long as possible.

The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity

1 in 2 of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime — from the very young to those nearing the end of life.

Our aim

We're funding 30 specialist research staff at The Royal Marsden over the next two years. In that time, they will work on a total of 100 clinical trials that will aim to achieve breakthroughs in cancer treatment, bringing hope to patients and families across the UK.

Through the partnership, we will work with experts from The Royal Marsden School to strengthen our understanding of the cancer journey from screening and diagnosis to treatment and ongoing care, to ensure colleagues support customers affected by cancer in the best possible way.
