Supporting someone with their finances

If someone you’re supporting needs help managing their finances, there are different ways you can help them with their banking. Whether you're acting under a power of attorney or need a third-party mandate for everyday banking tasks, we'll explain the available options and how to set them up.

Choosing the right type of access

Choose the type of access that best fits your needs. Think about whether you need support for a short time or for the long term. If your situation changes, you can update your choice at any time.

Power of attorney

A Power of Attorney is a legal document confirming a formal arrangement. It allows someone you trust to act in your best interests and manage your money, even if you lose mental capacity.

It can be set up now and put in place for the future.

Court of Protection Order

A Court of Protection Order is a legal document issued by the Court of Protection. The Order confirms who can make decisions and manage a person's affairs on their behalf. It's used when the person has lost mental capacity and does not have a lasting power of attorney in place.

Third Party Mandate

A temporary arrangement between you and a trusted person. They can help you with every day banking needs on one of your accounts. It’s limited to:

  • access to a single savings or current account
  • transactions in branch only.

Register a document with us

If you already have a power of attorney or Court of Protection Order set up, you must first register the document with us. Once you have registered, you can manage the donor’s accounts.

If you have been given a Court appointed authority as a deputy, guardian or controller - register the Court Order with us to start managing someone else’s accounts.
