What you need to do
1. Get your power of attorney document set up
The type of power of attorney document you need depends on where you live. Different legal arrangements apply in England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
Get set up by visiting the government website for where you (the donor) live:
If you can't view the whole table, swipe, scroll, or rotate your phone to show more > > >
| Region in the UK where the donor lives | Type of document | Government website |
|---|---|---|
| England and Wales | Lasting power of attorney (LPA) and Enduring power of attorney (EPA) if made before before 2007 | GOV.UK (opens in new window) |
| Scotland | Continuing Power of Attorney (CPA) and Combined PoA (welfare and finances) | mygov.scot (opens in new window) |
| Northern Ireland | Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) | nidirect.gov.uk (opens in new window) |
2. Create an access code for faster registration
If you have a LPA and it’s registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, you can create a Secure Access Code to share securely with us. This can speed up the registration process and means you won't need to provide the original document unless we ask for it.
The access code:
- usually starts with ‘V’
- is valid for 50 days.

[00:12]
This service aims to make it easier, quicker,
[00:15]
and more convenient to register
[00:17]
a lasting power of attorney at Nationwide.
[00:19]
There are two sides to this service.
[00:21]
One is for those needing to share LPA (Lasting Power of Attorney) details,
[00:24]
and the other is for those needing to view those details.
[00:29]
The donor and all active attorneys on a registered LPA
[00:32]
will receive login credentials
[00:34]
to access the lasting power of attorney account
[00:37]
if they choose.
[00:39]
Visual of the screen you will see when creating an account, to sign into the Lasting Power of Attorney account. The cursor hovers over the link for 'create an account.'
Jordan Williamson-Kerr: However, they'll first need to create an account
[00:41]
by using an email address
[00:43]
and password in order to access the portal.
[00:47]
Once this has been created,
[00:49]
you'll see any LPAs already added to the account
[00:53]
under the name heading within the portal.
[00:57]
If this is the first time you've used this service,
[01:00]
you'll need to add the LPA by selecting the green
[01:03]
'Add another LPA' box at the top of the page.
Visual provided of the page you will see with the green box identified.
[01:06]
Jordan Williamson-Kerr: You'll then need to add the LPA reference number,
[01:10]
the activation key, and their date of birth.
Visual provided of the radio button you need to select saying 'Yes, I have an activation key' then click continue.
[01:14]
Jordan Williamson-Kerr: Once you've added an LPA to your account,
[01:16]
you'll then need to grant access to Nationwide
[01:19]
by issuing an access code.
[01:22]
You'll do this by selecting
[01:23]
give an organisation access on the main page
Visual of the screen showing you next click on the link to 'Give an organisation access'
[01:27]
Jordan Williamson-Kerr: and type the name of the organisation,
[01:29]
such as Nationwide or Nationwide Building Society.
[01:34]

Jordan Williamson-Kerr: Once added, an access code will be displayed,
[01:37]
which is then shared with Nationwide.
[01:40]
If an access code has previously been granted,
[01:42]
you can select check access codes to find existing ones.

[01:47]
Jordan Williamson-Kerr: Remember, these are only valid for 30 days
[01:50]
and Nationwide require at least 11 working days remaining
[01:54]
in order to complete the registration.
[01:57]
If your access code has less than that,
[01:59]
you'll need to generate a new one following the steps above.
[02:03]
Visual returns to our Nationwide employee 'Jordan Williamson-Kerr, who continues to explain the process.
Jordan Williamson-Kerr: Now you have your access code,
[02:05]
pop into your local branch
[02:06]
and complete the registration with Nationwide.

Recording ends with the Nationwide branded logo.
