Payment and transfer limits and timescales

There are different daily limits and timescales depending on how and when you’d like to send money.

Sending money to a non-Nationwide account

The amount you can send depends on how you’d like to pay. The payment usually arrives immediately, but can take up to 2 hours. From your current account, you can send:


  • £0.01 - £10,000 through the Banking app and Internet Bank to new or existing payees
  • £0.01 - £9,999.99 at a Nationwide branch to new or existing payees
  • £0.01 - £10,000 through ATMs to existing payees only.

Future dated payments

You can schedule payments to go out on a future date:

  • if you want a future dated payment to leave your account tomorrow, it must be set it up by 10pm today
  • if you set it up after 10pm, the payment will take an extra day
  • if you want to change or cancel a payment that's due to leave your account tomorrow, you must do so by 10pm today.

These payments arrive the same day if sent before 3pm. They cost £20 and are called CHAPS payments. They can be made from your current account through the Internet Bank or at a Nationwide branch.

  • You can send £0.01 - £5,000,000
  • Your available balance is updated immediately on both accounts
  • Payments before 7:30pm will show on your statement the next working day, payments after 7:30pm take an extra day
  • Interest is earned on the date the transfer is made.

  • You can send £0.01 - £50,000
  • Interest is earned on the date the transfer is made
  • Please wait until the next working day before you update your passbook.

  • You can send £0.01 - £10,000 per transaction
  • Your available balance is updated on the same day
  • The new balance and transactions will show online the next working day

  • You can send £0.01 - £100,000 per transaction
  • Transfers will show online the next day
  • If you’re making an overpayment, please check your terms and conditions, as some mortgages apply overpayment charges.

  • You can send £0.01 - £10,000 per transaction
  • Transfers normally arrive the day the payment is made

International payments

Timings and costs vary depending on where you’re sending the money:


  • sending Euros to a European country costs £9 and can take up to 2 working days
  • all other international payments cost £20 and can take 4 working days or longer.

These can be made from your current account through the Internet Bank or in branch.

Standing orders

When you set up a standing order, you choose the date it will leave your current account. If this date falls on a weekend or a bank holiday, it will be made the next working day.

You can send:


  • £0.01 - £10,000 through the Internet Bank. These should be set up by 4pm at least one working day before the payment is due
  • £0.01 - £9,999.99 at a Nationwide Branch. These should be set up by 5pm at least one working day before your payment is due.

  • through the Banking app or the Internet Bank - by 4pm at least one working day before the payment is due
  • over the phone – 3 days before the payment is due.

A Direct Debit to pay your Nationwide credit card

Give us a call or speak to us in branch. The time it takes for your changes to take affect varies, so it’s best to call us in advance of the payment date.

A Direct Debit to another company

The company or provider sets up the Direct Debit with your permission. When they set it up, they will tell you the payment amount and when the payment will be collected.

We’re unable to make changes to Direct Debits you have with other companies. You need to contact the company with any changes you wish to make.

  • You can cancel a Direct Debit by 6pm the day before the payment is due using the Banking app or Internet Bank.
  • You should let the company or provider know before you cancel to avoid being charged for missed payments.
