Extensions, conservatories and renovations

If you already have Home Insurance with us and plan to renovate or build an extension (including a conservatory), please call us – we'll need to check your policy will cover you throughout the work and afterwards.

If you don't have Home Insurance with us yet, and are about to start building an extension or renovating, we won't be able to give you Home Insurance unless you already have a mortgage with us. If you do have a mortgage with us, get in touch and we'll do what we can to help you protect your home.

Flooding and storm damage

Your home and contents will be covered for storm and flood damage if you take out Buildings and Contents insurance respectively. Just bear in mind that you won't be covered for general wear and tear or maintenance – so if your home or contents aren't maintained properly, and are damaged during normal UK weather conditions, you won't be covered. We also don't cover fences, hedges or gates damaged by a storm or flood.

Items in storage or being moved

Your Contents insurance covers your possessions when you're moving to a new, permanent home in the British Isles (the UK, Republic of Ireland and surrounding islands).

We'll also cover them while you're living somewhere else temporarily - as well as the things your family take with them while living or studying away.

What's more, we'll cover your contents in both your new home and your old home for up to 90 days and if you put your contents into storage while you're moving home, we'll cover them against accidental loss or damage for up to seven days.

Second/holiday homes and empty properties

You can leave your home unoccupied – with no one staying there at all during the day or overnight – for up to 60 days in a row, and it'll still be covered by your Home Insurance.

Let us know if it'll be left unoccupied for more than 60 days though as we may need to apply some conditions to your cover.

Sports equipment

Find out about cover for your bicycles.

Other sports equipment, like golf clubs and tennis rackets, are covered under your Contents insurance while they're in your home, garage or shed. We don't cover boats and aircraft – things like wetbikes, jet skis, hang gliders, paragliders, sand and wind yachts.

Subsidence

Subsidence happens when the ground underneath your property moves, affecting its stability. This generally happens in an uneven way, causing cracking to the structure of the property. If you already have Home Insurance with us and claim for damage caused by subsidence, heave or landslip, you'll need to pay an excess of £1,000.

If your home is showing signs of subsidence, landslip or heave – or has ever been damaged by it in the past – we won't be able to give you a new Home Insurance policy unless you already have a mortgage with us.

Tenants and lodgers

If you're a tenant, you can take out Contents insurance to cover your possessions and any furniture (like a television) that you've provided yourself.

We can't give you Contents insurance if you’ve signed a joint tenancy agreement with other tenants, unless they're a member of your family and live with you.

We also can't give you Contents insurance if you let your home to other people or if you have more than two lodgers.

Watches and jewellery

Valuables – watches, jewellery and anything containing gold, silver or platinum – are covered under Contents insurance while they're at home. We'll ask you to tell us about anything worth more than £2,000. You have two options:

  • Up to £50,000 Contents insurance, which would pay up to £15,000 for valuables in the home
  • More than £50,000 Contents cover, which would pay up to £30,000 in the home

The valuables that you take away from home can be covered by choosing to buy Out & About Cover as an Optional Extra. This will cover your watches, jewellery and other personal possessions when you take them away from home anywhere within the British Isles (the UK, Republic of Ireland and surrounding islands) and up to 90 days worldwide.

With Out & About Cover:
