What is changing?

From February 2025, you will not be able to use your passbook to bank in branch.

You can choose to either keep your existing account, apply for a new account matched to your existing account, or open another Nationwide savings account.

You can only apply for a new account if you have:

  • an instant access passbook savings account
  • a limited access passbook savings account
  • an ISA passbook account (Help to Buy: ISA, Smart Junior ISA and Junior ISA Maturity are not included)

Your new account will have the same interest rate but instead of a passbook, you will get one of our new savings wallets and cards. Here, we will explain how these will work a bit differently to your passbook.

Children’s passbook accounts

In early 2025, we will be offering alternative savings accounts for our children’s passbook account customers. We will contact you closer to this time, and your passbook will also stop working in February 2025.

Our new savings wallet and cards

Savings wallet

All our new accounts for passbook customers come with a savings wallet.

The wallet will have space to store a card and pocket for mini statements. These statements will allow you to see your savings at a glance.

Cash card for savings accounts

If you have an instant or limited access savings account, you can get a cash card.

You will be able to use a cash card to:

  • identify yourself in Nationwide branches
  • deposit cheques and money at Nationwide cash machines
  • withdraw money at Nationwide cash machines
  • print mini statements in Nationwide branches or at Nationwide cash machines

You will also be able to continue to bank face-to-face in branch as well as at our cash machines.

ISA card

If you have an ISA, you can get an ISA card.

You will be able to use the ISA card at Nationwide branches to:

  • identify yourself
  • deposit cheques and money
  • withdraw money
  • print mini statements

The ISA card cannot be used at cash machines.

Here are your 3 options

If you have an instant or limited access passbook savings account or ISA passbook, you have 3 options to choose from.

Option 1: Keep using your existing savings account

Don't regularly use your passbook and do not need a card or savings wallet? You can keep using your existing account. But from February 2025, you will not be able to use your passbook and there will be changes to how you prove your identity in branch.

Option 2: Open an alternative savings account with a wallet and card

Like using your passbook? You might want to consider one of our alternative savings accounts or ISAs with a card and savings wallet.

Option 3: Open a new savings account without a wallet and card

Don’t use your passbook or ready for a change? Compare our range of savings accounts and ISAs that might suit you better. These will not come with a card or savings wallet.
