What is Contents insurance?

Your household possessions – the things you use in your house everyday – are covered by Contents insurance while they’re in your home. There are some limits on what we’d pay out and certain things we don’t cover (exclusions) – open the Policy Wording booklet to see everything that is and isn’t covered.

Did you know these are covered?

  • Gadgets and electronic devices
  • Furniture and clothes
  • Watches and jewellery
  • Bicycles kept in your house, shed or garage
  • Wheelchairs and mobility scooters kept in your house, shed or garage
  • Contents in the Open Cover up to £750

But these are some of the things that aren't:

  • Wear and tear
  • Damage due to lack of maintenance

And you’ll need to add an Optional Extra to get:
  • Accidental Damage Cover
  • Out & About Cover for your personal possessions
  • Garden Cover
  • Bicycle Cover
  • Matching Items Cover

The excess you’ll need to pay

We’ll ask you to pay some money towards most claims you make – this is your ‘excess’. It’ll be at least £50, but you can increase it (up to a maximum of £500) which may reduce the price.

Water escaping (from your washing machine, dishwasher, fixed water or heating system) and damaging your contents has its own excess of £350.

You won't pay an excess when you use Home Emergency Cover.

You can buy any of these Optional Extras

We’ll tell you how the price changes as you add or remove cover. And you can update your Home Insurance at any time – there’s no admin fee to pay.

There are some limits on what we’d pay out and certain things we don’t cover (exclusions). You’ll also need to pay an excess when you claim.

Accidental Damage Cover

(Available with Buildings and/or Contents insurance)

Accidental Damage Cover is for those accidental spillages, knocks, drops or DIY disasters that can damage your home and contents.

If you have Buildings insurance, it’ll cover you for repairs to the structure and fittings (e.g. doors, bathroom suites and kitchen cupboards) of your home. So, if you accidentally drill through a pipe or break a window, you’re covered.

If you have Contents insurance it’ll cover you for accidental damage to your contents – if you spill wine on your rug, for example, or the dog knocks over your TV.

You’ll be covered up to the limits shown on your Buildings and/or Contents insurance

You won't be covered:
  • For damage caused by wear and tear or lack of maintenance

Open the Policy Wording booklet to see everything that is and isn't covered.

Matching Items Cover

(Available with Buildings and/or Contents insurance)

If we can’t match part of a set that needs replacing, we’ll replace the whole lot.

If you have Buildings insurance this would cover your fixtures and fittings. So, if your washing machine leaked damaging a kitchen cupboard and we can't repair it or get you a new one, we'd replace the whole set, for example.

If you have Contents insurance it would cover the contents of your home, such as your three-piece suite.

You’ll be covered up to the limits shown on your Buildings and/or Contents insurance

You won't be covered:
  • For damage caused by wear and tear or lack of maintenance
  • For undamaged items where the cost to repair or replace the damaged item is below the policy excess

Open the Policy Wording booklet to see everything that is and isn't covered.

Garden Cover

(Only available with Contents insurance)

As part of our Contents Insurance, you'll receive up to £750 contents in the open cover, however you can choose to add £5,000 further cover for loss or damage to your contents in the garden including, trees, shrubs, plants, lawns, tools and garden furniture.

We’ll pay up to £5,000 to replace or repair your garden and its contents, including re-landscaping design fees

You won't be covered:
  • For damage caused by falling trees or branches
  • If your home has been left unoccupied for more than 60 days

Open the Policy Wording booklet to see everything that is and isn't covered.

Out & About Cover

(Only available with Contents insurance)

Your personal possessions – your jewellery, watches, mobile phone, camera, laptop or golf clubs, for example – are covered by your Contents insurance while they’re at home.

You can add Out & About Cover so they’re protected against accidental loss or damage when you take them anywhere in the British Isles (the UK, Republic of Ireland and surrounding islands) and for up to 90 days worldwide. We'll ask you to tell us if any of your possessions are worth more than £2,000.

You can choose the level of cover you need – cover for your possessions worth more than £2,000 as well as the option to add £2,500 to £15,000 for cover your everyday items

We’ll pay up to £2,000 for each individual item. You'll need to tell us about any personal possession worth more than £2,000

We’ll pay up to £2,000 for items stolen from a car

We’ll pay up to £500 for cash taken out and about with you

You won't be covered:
  • For garden equipment and furniture left in your garden (you can add Garden Cover for this)
  • For bicycles taken away from home (you can add Bicycle Cover for this)

Open the Policy Wording booklet to see everything that is and isn't covered.

Bicycle Cover

(Only available with Contents insurance)

Your bicycles (including electric bikes) are covered by your Contents insurance while they’re at home.

You can add Bicycle Cover so they’re also protected when you take them anywhere in the British Isles (the UK, Republic of Ireland and surrounding islands) and for up to 90 days worldwide. We’ll ask you to tell us if any of your bikes are worth more than £1,000.

We'll pay up to £1,000 for each bicycle you take away from home (including hired bicycles if you're responsible for them)

Any bicycle worth more than £1,000 needs to be added to your policy

You won't be covered:
  • If your bicycle is stolen when it’s been left unattended and unlocked

Open the Policy Wording booklet to see everything that is and isn't covered.

Home Emergency Cover

(Available with Buildings and/or Contents insurance)

We use a company called CET to provide Home Emergency Cover, so we can help you if the unexpected happens – if your doors and windows are damaged during a burglary or storm for example, or if you lose your main source of heating, lighting or water.

You’ll always be able to contact us in an emergency, and we’ll arrange for one of our recommended repairers to come and make your home safe and secure.

We’ll pay up to £500 for Home Emergency claims

You won't be covered:
  • For power cuts caused by your electric or gas supply being cut off
  • For power cuts caused by industrial action/strikes

Open the Policy Wording booklet to see everything that is and isn't covered.

Legal Cover

(Available with Buildings and/or Contents insurance)

Legal Cover is provided by Arc Legal Assistance and administered by Lyons Davidson. It can help if you want to know more about your rights or the legal aspects of a situation – for example if you (or someone in your family) have been injured, or if there’s an issue with your contract of employment.

It’ll also help cover the costs if you take legal action.

We’ll pay up to £50,000 for Legal Cover claims

You won't be covered:
  • If you contact us about something more than six months after it happened
  • If you don’t have a realistic chance of winning the case

Open the Policy Wording booklet to see everything that is and isn't covered.

Is there something specific you want to cover?

You might have something that’s valuable to you – a watch, a piece of jewellery, an antique. It could be something functional, but equally important: a bicycle perhaps, or a wheelchair. Or maybe you’re wondering if your situation will affect your insurance – a listed building, items in storage, or something else? We’ll tell you what we can and can’t cover.
