We think the move to a greener society and a greener world should begin at home. And, as energy-efficient homes often have lower energy bills, they could also help you save money.

Most homes sold in the UK need an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). This tells you how energy efficient, or green, the home is. Each property is given a score - the higher the number the more energy-efficient the property. This is calculated using a Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP).

If you're buying a home with a Nationwide mortgage, we'll reward you with:

  • £500 cashback, for a property with a score of 92 or above.
  • £250 cashback, for a property with a score of 86 to 91.

This cashback offer is available in addition to our other cashback offers.

However, if your new property’s EPC document is out of date, we won’t be able to tell. So do make sure you check this with the seller before you complete. Nationwide is not responsible for the registration or accuracy of the EPC.

You can often find EPCs on property listings, or you can look up an EPC on the government website (opens in a new window)

To get the Green Reward cashback

You will need:

  • to be buying a home with a Nationwide mortgage (either as a first-time buyer or a home mover)
  • to complete your mortgage on a property with a score of 86 or more, and
  • the EPC document needs to be on the government’s online register within 2 weeks of your mortgage completing.

How it works

  1. We’ll check your property’s EPC

Two weeks after your mortgage completes, we’ll use the government register to look up your property’s EPC and check its score.

  2. We’ll let you know

If your new home is eligible, we’ll say if you’ll receive £500 or £250, depending on the property score. We’ll text you if you gave us a mobile number during your mortgage application. If not, we’ll send a letter.

  3. We’ll transfer any cashback automatically

You’ll receive your cashback 4 weeks after your mortgage completes. We’ll transfer it to the account you pay your mortgage from.
