Tips to help you have fun without breaking the bank

Make the most of free activities in your local area

When we think about days out, we often think about travelling to another city or area to explore. But have you thought about what is happening closer to home?

A lot of museums are free to enter. If you have one nearby, they can definitely be worth a visit. You can also explore many parks or gardens for free – although you may have to pay for parking.

Another way to enjoy the local community for free is to volunteer. This is a great option if you want to get out in the fresh air. Or meet some neighbours. Plus, it will keep the kids busy. Take a look at your councils’ website to see if they have a list of places that need help in your area.

Take advantage of discounted travel

If you do want to go further afield, see if you can benefit from cheaper travel. Family railcards or bus tickets can cut the cost of travelling significantly.

Going somewhere in particular? Travelling to theme parks and attractions by public transport can sometimes mean deals that make it cheaper for you. For example, travelling to Legoland Windsor by train this year could save you a 1/3 on your visit. The same is true for Thorpe Park, Chessington World of Adventures and Cadbury World. So be sure to do an internet search before booking your tickets.

Get involved in the pre-loved movement

Need to update the summer wardrobe for you or your children? Remember that new to you does not have to mean brand new. Visit your local charity shops and car boots to see if you can pick up a few bargains.

And don’t forget sites like eBay, Vinted and Facebook Marketplace. A lot of people sell items that are brand new for a fraction of the price. Plus, you can clear out your own cupboards and make some money for yourself.

Turn to technology

That doesn’t mean stay in and watch TV all summer. If you have a smartphone, you and your children could give geocaching a go.

Geocaching uses GPS to create a real-world treasure hunt. Navigate to a set of coordinates and see if you can find a geocache. This is a container that has been hidden somewhere nearby. Inside could be keyrings, ornaments, books or even foreign currency. There are millions to be found, and setting up an account is free.
