Supporting Shelter since 2001

Like Shelter, we believe everyone should have a place they can call home. For more than two decades we’ve been working together to provide much needed support and during this time, our customers and colleagues have:

  • donated more than £8 million
  • helped more than 145,000 people facing a housing emergency
  • supported Shelter’s helplines, for those facing homelessness
  • worked together on policy and campaigns that make a difference to people in housing need.

Help a family into a home this Christmas

Laura and her two children faced eviction last Christmas. They were placed in unsuitable temporary accommodation not knowing where they would move to next. Find out how support and advice from Shelter meant they could find a new home and celebrate Christmas this year.

00:00:01.600 --> 00:00:03.840
My landlord informed me last year

00:00:03.840 --> 00:00:05.520
that he wanted to sell,

00:00:05.520 --> 00:00:08.200
so we got the eviction notice.

00:00:08.200 --> 00:00:09.480
The council, all they’d offered

00:00:09.480 --> 00:00:12.240
was an inappropriate accommodation.

00:00:12.240 --> 00:00:14.320
that wasn't fit for my autistic son,

00:00:14.320 --> 00:00:17.120
didn’t take any notice of anything

00:00:17.120 --> 00:00:18.360
people were saying.

00:00:18.360 --> 00:00:20.480
They were just very straight,

00:00:20.480 --> 00:00:20.880
you know,

00:00:20.880 --> 00:00:22.200
you're going to have to go into hostel.

00:00:22.200 --> 00:00:24.960
You're going to have to go into a B and B,

00:00:24.960 --> 00:00:26.120
and you're going to have to get rid of,

00:00:26.120 --> 00:00:27.160
we’ve got two dogs.

00:00:27.160 --> 00:00:29.560
So my councilor, who was with me,

00:00:29.560 --> 00:00:30.880
helping , me fight,

00:00:30.880 --> 00:00:33.000
said that I need to contact Shelter

00:00:33.000 --> 00:00:34.640
because they are brilliant,

00:00:34.640 --> 00:00:37.640
and I contacted them straight away.

00:00:37.640 --> 00:00:39.400
Lovely guy called Gerard.

00:00:39.400 --> 00:00:41.800
He dealt with all the legal side

00:00:41.800 --> 00:00:42.640
of helping me

00:00:42.640 --> 00:00:43.320
with the council,

00:00:43.320 --> 00:00:44.600
because I didn't understand

00:00:44.600 --> 00:00:46.800
any of the emails I got.

00:00:46.800 --> 00:00:49.160
It was like a hug, you see.

00:00:49.160 --> 00:00:50.280
Every time I could speak to him,

00:00:50.280 --> 00:00:53.160
he made me feel better that there was

00:00:53.160 --> 00:00:54.880
someone at the end of the phone

00:00:54.880 --> 00:00:56.360
that would understand.

00:00:56.360 --> 00:00:58.360
But once Gerard got in contact

00:00:58.360 --> 00:00:59.600
with the council,

00:00:59.600 --> 00:01:01.680
they found a three bedroom house

00:01:01.680 --> 00:01:03.360
as a permanent offer.

00:01:03.360 --> 00:01:06.560
We moved in within a day and

00:01:06.560 --> 00:01:07.920
the house is perfect.

00:01:07.920 --> 00:01:10.640
I’m loving that I’m making it a little home for us.

00:01:10.640 --> 00:01:12.720
Yeah, we're very, very grateful

00:01:12.720 --> 00:01:14.560
and pleased with the help we got.

00:01:14.560 --> 00:01:16.200
We were lucky,

00:01:16.200 --> 00:01:17.600
but there's so many people out there

00:01:17.600 --> 00:01:19.120
that don't get that chance,

00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:21.720
and with the support that Shelter could get,

00:01:21.720 --> 00:01:23.880
with donations,

00:01:23.880 --> 00:01:25.240
it would save a lot of lives.

Donate and make a difference

Unfortunately, Laura’s story isn’t unique. As rent and mortgage rates rise, wages do not. The rise in the cost of living affects more and more people, with families being made homeless with little or no options.

This Christmas, 145,000 children in the UK will be homeless. Donating to Shelter, no matter how big or small, could help a family into their own home this winter.

We’re set up to help the British Red Cross whenever a crisis strikes. We can take donations in our branches and send the funds direct to the charity.
