From 30 October 2017, you should always assume any cheque you write will be withdrawn from your account the next working day after it’s been deposited (Monday to Friday only).
It’s always best to make sure you don’t write a cheque unless you have sufficient money in your account to cover it. If a cheque you write is deposited and ‘bounces’ – because there isn’t enough money in your account – you may have to pay a penalty charge. See our full list of fees and charges or call us on 0800 30 20 11 to ask for a copy of this information.
If you have a Nationwide current account, sign up for text alerts. That way, we can let you know automatically how much is in your account. From 30 October 2017, your account balance will include cheques cleared using the new cheque imaging process.
