Cheque Imaging – FAQs

Understanding cheque imaging

No. Simply write and deposit cheques in exactly the same way as you always have. Other banks or building societies may choose to introduce this feature in the future, but we have no plans to do this at the moment.

No. You can keep on using your current cheque book.

It’s always best to make sure you don’t write a cheque unless you have sufficient money in your account to cover it. If a cheque you write is deposited and ‘bounces’ – because there isn’t enough money in your account – you may have to pay a penalty charge. See our full list of fees and charges or call us on 0800 30 20 11 to ask for a copy of this information.

As a general rule, assume cheques paid into your account will be available for withdrawal on the fourth working day, and cleared for certainty – which means the money can’t generally be taken back from your account after that time – on the sixth working day.

You should also assume cheques you write will be withdrawn from your account the next working day after they’re deposited.

Safety and security

The cheque imaging system has more checks in place than the previous paper-based system. That’s because we’ve built in robust security measures to ensure you continue to stay protected.

If you’re ever the victim of cheque fraud, our Financial Crime team will be on hand to help you. Call them on 0800 464 3051 as soon as you become aware of any fraudulent activity.

No. Each cheque will pass through an increased number of automatic, manual and visual checks, and we'll be using the latest recognition technology. So we don't expect any increase in cheque fraud.

Paying in cheques

The time a cheque takes to clear starts from the point at which it’s collected from the cash machine or ATM and processed through our clearing system. It won’t start from the moment you deposit the cheque. So we can’t guarantee a cheque deposited in this way will be cleared the next working day – even with the new cheque imaging system.

Not necessarily. We’ll process and credit your cheque on the working day we receive it. Cheques you send us will be available for withdrawal and certainty (meaning the money can’t generally be taken back from your account after that time) by 23.59 the next working day after the working day on which we receive it.

Remember, cheques will also take time to reach us by post – so please bear this in mind.

Cheques will be kept for three working days then destroyed securely. If you need a copy of your cheque, you will only be given a printout of the scanned image.

Thanks to cheque imaging, you’ll start earning interest on the same day we scan and credit cheques to your current account. For savings accounts, you’ll start earning interest from the next working day.

Specialist cheque services

Tell us immediately, and we’ll try to stop your cheque. However, the new cheque imaging system means this may not always be possible.

Fees for specialist cheque services such as stopping cheques or requesting copies of them remain unchanged by our move to the cheque imaging system.
