How do I make a payment to a person or company?

It’s easy to send up to £10,000 using our Banking app or the Internet Bank – you can set up a payment to go straightaway or at a later date.

If you want to make a payment over £10,000, you can make a CHAPS payment

Before you do…

Take a second to protect yourself from fraud. Remember, if you willingly send money to someone we can’t always get it back for you, even if you don’t receive what you paid for.


If you’re paying someone new, you’ll need:

  • your card and PIN
  • a card reader
  • the payee’s details, including their account number and sort code.

Hints and tips:

Any bank or building society’s card reader will work, as long as it accepts your debit card - it's equally safe and secure.

Make a payment in the Banking app

  1. Log in to the Banking app.
  2. Tap on the menu in the top right corner of the screen.
  3. Select ‘Payments and transfers’.
  4. Tap ‘Pay or move money’.
  5. Choose the account you’d like to pay with.
  6. Either choose ‘A new person or company’ to pay someone new or select ‘Someone you’ve paid before’ and then tap ‘Continue’.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Make a payment in the Internet Bank

  1. Log into the Internet Bank.
  2. Click on the ‘Move money’ tab at the top of the page.
  3. Find the ’Pay a bill or send money to someone’ panel.
  4. Choose the account you wish to use, then select ‘Single payment’.
  5. Choose ‘A new person or organisation’ to pay someone new or select ‘Someone you’ve paid before’.
  6. Click ‘Continue’ and follow the on-screen instructions.

You’ll need to bring:


  • the payment details of the person or organisation you’re paying
  • your account passbook or debit card
  • a valid UK passport or driving licence
  • proof of address.
