If you want to send a payment of over £10,000, you can make a CHAPS payment from your current account using the Internet Bank. This costs £20 and arrives the same day if sent before 3pm.

Make a CHAPS payment in the Internet Bank

Is it a new payee? If so, take a second to protect yourself from fraud. Remember, if you willingly send money to someone we can’t always get it back for you, even if you don’t receive what you paid for.

To make a CHAPS payment in the Internet Bank, you’ll need:

  • the name, address, sort code and account number of the person or organisation you’re paying
  • the name of their bank
  • a card reader

Hints and tips:

Any bank or building society’s card reader will work as long as it accepts your bank card – it’s equally safe and secure.

  1. Check you have the right payment details – once you’ve sent a CHAPS payment you can’t get it back, so be absolutely sure you’re sending it to the right place.
  2. Log in to the Internet Bank.
  3. Click on the ‘Move money’ tab at the top of page.
  4. Find the ‘Other Payments’ section at the bottom of the page.
  5. Where it says ‘Make a payment using CHAPS’, select the account you want to pay with and press ‘Go
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to make the CHAPS payment.
