How do I make a large payment?

There are several ways you can make a large payment:

If it’s over £10,000 you can:

  • set up a CHAPS payment, which costs £20 and arrives the next day.
  • send up to 5 payments of £10,000 instantly, using the Internet Bank or Banking app.

If it’s under £10,000 you can:

  • make a normal payment in the Banking app or Internet Bank, which is instant.

Make a CHAPS payment in the Internet Bank

You’ll need:

  • the name, address, sort code and account number of the person receiving the funds.
  • the name of the bank receiving the funds.
  • a card reader.
  • to make sure the money you wish to send is in your current account (not another account, such as a savings account).

Note:

Any bank or building society’s card reader will work, as long as it accepts your debit card - it's equally safe and secure.

  1. Check your payee is legitimate, and their details are correct to protect yourself from fraud.
  2. Log in to the Internet Bank.
  3. Click on the ‘Move money’ tab at the top of page.
  4. Find the ‘Other Payments’ section at the bottom of the page.
  5. Where it says ‘Make a payment using CHAPS’, select the account you want to pay with and press ‘Go’.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to make the CHAPS payment.
