Contactless lets you pay for up to £30 worth of goods or services in a single transaction. Contactless payments are fast, easy and secure. There's no need to carry the correct change or find an ATM.

  • The most you can spend in each transaction is £30 (may vary outside the UK).
  • For extra security, you might occasionally be asked to enter your 4-digit PIN, or sign.

How do I get a contactless card?

Contactless cards are available with all of our current accounts and credit cards. 

We'll issue you with a contactless enabled card when your current card is due to be replaced - or if your card is lost or stolen. If you'd like one sooner, you can request this within the Internet Bank, in branch, or call us

Where you can use contactless

You can make contactless payments at over 300,000 locations; including supermarkets, restaurants and coffee shops in the UK. Just look for the contactless logo at the checkout. Go to Visa contactless to find out more.

Is it safe?

Contactless payments are safe and secure and use the same reliable Nationwide and Visa technology for processing a payment. For extra security, you’ll occasionally be asked to enter your PIN or sign.

How to use it

1. Look

Look for the contactless logo when you’re paying for up to £30 worth of goods or services.

2. Touch

When paying, just touch your card against the reader.

3. Wait

A beep or green light means your payment’s going through. For extra security, you might occasionally have to insert your card and enter your 4-digit PIN, or sign.

4. Done

Ok that's it. Your payment's been approved.

Before you can use the contactless feature you’ll need to activate your card by making a Chip and PIN or Chip and Signature transaction or at an ATM.
