As a result of Brexit, we’re unable to provide credit cards for members living in the following countries:

  • Netherlands – if the letter you’ve received is dated before 18 January 2021, your account was closed on 31 December 2020. If the letter you’ve received is dated 18 January 2021 or after, your account will be closed on 17 March 2021.
  • Italy – if the letter you’ve received is dated before 18 January 2021, your account was closed on 27 January 2021. If the letter you’ve received is dated 18 January 2021 or after, your account will be closed on 17 March 2021.

Therefore, if you’re a member living in one of these countries, it’s important you take steps to review your current financial situation, repay any money you owe, if you can, and make alternative arrangements by deadline for action date shown above.

If you're no longer living in an EU or EEA country, and now live in the UK, you'll need to update your address details so you can keep your credit card. You can do this via the Internet Bank, or by calling us on +44 1793 810557. Lines are open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm GMT.

What you need to do now

Make alternative financial arrangements

From the deadline for action date shown above, you’ll no longer be able to user your credit card to pay for goods and services. If you have any regular payments coming out of the account, you’ll need to rearrange or cancel them.

Repay your outstanding balance

If you can, please repay the amount you owe in full before the deadline for action date shown above. You can do this by transferring money via the Internet Bank from your Nationwide current account, if you have one.

You can also use the Internet Bank to set up a bill payment from a current account.

If your current account is with another UK provider, you can call the number on the back of your credit card, and using the phone keyboard you’ll be able to arrange a debit card payment, or speak to someone if you need help.

If you don’t have a UK current account and you’re able to, you could visit one of our branches and repay the outstanding balance in cash.

If these options don’t work for you, please read the step-by-step guide to closing your credit card. You can download it using the link at the top of this page. The guide includes options for paying off your credit card balance after the deadline for action shown above.

Stop using your Nationwide credit card to pay for goods and services

If you’ve been able to repay the balance on your credit card, please don’t use the card to pay for any more goods or services so that your balance remains at zero and you can close your account.

Closing your credit card

If you’ve been able to repay your balance, you can call us on +44 2476 438997 to ask us to close your account. Lines are open Monday to Saturday 8am to 8pm and Sunday 9am to 5pm GMT.

Remember, you won’t be able to use your credit card after the date shown above. If you still have an outstanding balance, there are options for paying it off after this date. Please check the step-by-step guide to closing your credit card. You can download it using the link at the top of this page.

Joint accounts where one holder lives in the UK

The account can remain open if the holder living in the affected country removes their name from it or moves their registered address to the UK. If you want to add a joint account holder to an account, both of you will need to live in the UK to avoid having to close the account.

Money worries

We understand that repaying the outstanding debt could cause financial difficulties, that’s why we’ll write to you soon to explain what other options you have.

In the meantime, check your options if you’re in financial difficulty, or call +44 1793 810557. Lines are open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm GMT.
