David – also known as ‘Goldie’ – was nominated by people from his local community. Alongside his career as a professional footballer, he set up a football academy called Gold & Gray.
The academy runs training camps and coaching sessions for future elite players. He has also organised coaching for children within youth detention centres.
"This helps to get them back on track and becomes part of their weekly schedule and goal towards being released and working on a better future,” one of his nominees said.
David works closely with schools. His coaches work with children who have behavioural struggles. It helps break up their day and keeps them motivated and focused.
David also set up a girls-only football academy. Many young girls have attended and ‘fallen in love’ with the game.
"David is a complete asset to the footballing community – a role model who is inclusive and accepting of everyone,” one of his nominees said.
“In return, he is dearly loved and valued. Not once does Goldie ever ask for thanks, look for recognition or take time to recognise how far he has come and the young lives he is enhancing by the work he does,” they added.
The Mutual Respect Award is part of our partnership with the Football Association's (FA’s) Respect campaign. It aims to make grassroots football more respectful and positive.
Every month, you can nominate someone from your football club who has gone above and beyond to promote respect on or off the pitch.
The target is to engage with 1 million parents and coaches in The FA’s Respect campaign as part of our 3-year partnership.
