Hafiz, a 25-year-old volunteer football coach from London, is the Nationwide Mutual Respect Award winner for August 2021.

The award recognises outstanding contributions, achievements and behaviour in grassroots football by players under 18, coaches, teams, parents and referees.

The Nationwide Mutual Respect Award panel said: “We are delighted to give this award to Hafiz for his brilliant work in the local football communities of Essex and East London”.

Youth football

Hafiz was nominated by his local community, who praised his ‘tireless’ voluntary efforts for youth football clubs over the past 10 years.

‘We always meet and one thing that always strikes me is the financial sacrifice Hafiz makes for the young people he coaches, the nomination said. ‘He has spent a lot of his own money on club kits and fees for matches, training pitch hire and minibuses.

I once asked him why he does all of this without getting paid. He said, “if I can help one youngster from not going down the wrong path in life, then my job is complete”.

Life skills

Hafiz’s teams have been successful on the pitch. But his local community see that as a ‘bonus’ as he teaches respect to everyone ‘including the opposition and match officials’.

They hope this award can ‘motivate Hafiz to keep achieving great things and continue to help his community’.

Hafiz receives a trophy and tickets to an upcoming England game.
