Making a large payment
When you're making a large payment to another UK account, the fees and timescales depend on the amount you want to send in one go.
Payments up to £10,000
You can send payments up to £10,000 using the faster payment service:
No fee
Send payments of up to £10,000
Send as many payments as you want (you just need to have enough money in your account or arranged overdraft)
Send money to another account in the UK from your current account
Payments usually arrive immediately, but can take up to 2 hours
Payments over £10,000
To send over £10,000 in one payment, you’ll need to use the CHAPS service.
CHAPS payments:
- have a £20 transaction fee
- can only be processed Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays)
- cannot be cancelled once requested
- can be requested through the Internet Bank or at a Nationwide branch.

Internet Bank CHAPS payment
Timescales
Payments requested:
- Before 3pm will arrive the same working day.
- After 3pm will arrive the next working day.
What you’ll need
The name, sort code and account number of the payee
The name and address of their bank
A payment reference
A card reader
Information:
You can use a card reader from another bank or building society as long as it accepts your Visa debit card. It’s just as secure.
How to request the payment
- Log in to the Internet Bank.
- Click on the Move money tab at the top of page.
- Find the Other Payments section at the bottom of the page.
- Where it says Make a payment using CHAPS, select the account you want to pay with and press ‘Go’,
- Follow the on-screen instructions to make the CHAPS payment.
In branch CHAPS payment
Pop into branch and a member of our team will be happy to help you make the payment.
Timescales
Payments requested:
- Before 3pm will arrive the same working day.
- After 3pm may arrive the same working day. This can’t be guaranteed and it may arrive the next working day.
What you’ll need
The name, sort code and account number of the payee
The name and address of their bank
A payment reference
Your account passbook or debit card
A valid UK passport or driving licence
Proof of address
