Faster payment service

You can request to send payments of up to £10,000 at a time using the faster payment service. The money can be sent to any account in the UK from your current account. It's free to use, and there's no limit on the number of payments you can ask us to. You just need to have enough money in your account or arranged overdraft.

You can send an unlimited amount using the CHAPS payment service.

Costs

A CHAPS payment costs £20, but nothing to receive.

Timings

  • CHAPS payments can only be processed on working days.
  • If a CHAPS payment is instructed in a branch before 3pm, it should arrive by 5.30pm the same day.
  • If a CHAPS payment is instructed after 3pm on a working day, it should arrive by 5.30pm the next working day.

Note:

Once a CHAPS payment instruction has been given it can’t usually be cancelled.

You will need:

  • the name, sort code and account number of the payee
  • the name and address of their bank
  • a payment reference
  • a card reader (for the Internet Bank).

Information:

Any bank or building society’s card reader will work as long as it accepts your bank card – it’s equally safe and secure.


Ask us to make a CHAPS payment using the Internet Bank

Is it a new payee? If so, take a second to protect yourself from fraud. Remember, if you willingly send money to someone, we can’t always get it back for you.

  1. Log in to the Internet Bank.
  2. Click on the Move money tab at the top of page.
  3. Find the Other Payments section at the bottom of the page.
  4. Where it says Make a payment using CHAPS, select the account you want to pay with and press ‘Go’,
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to make the CHAPS payment.

Ask us to make a CHAPS payment in branch

Pop into branch and a member of our team will be happy to help you make the payment. You’ll need to bring:

  • the name, sort code and account number of the payee
  • the name and address of their bank
  • a payment reference
  • your account passbook or debit card
  • a valid UK passport or driving licence
  • proof of address.
