Nationwide’s poem of the month for December

At Nationwide, we believe it’s important that our members speak up for what matters to them. It’s a vital part of building society together. And it’s one of the inspirations behind our latest TV advertising campaign.

We also love to hear from budding poets or writers that have been inspired to share their own poems with us. So each month, we’ll bring you a new example of the many poems we’ve received.

The poem featured this month is from Catharine Boddy. Like a pair of well-worn slippers or a comfy cardigan, this piece conveys the warmth of the December holiday season. She describes all the sights, sounds, tastes and smells that accompany such a special time of year, and makes time for relaxation and family.

'The meaning of the season' by Catharine Boddy

Dark nights,
Chill winds,
This is when the fun begins.

Twinkling lights,
Smells of pine,
Cinnamon and spice entwine.

Choosing gifts,
Getting cards,
Greetings from both near and far.

Roaring fires,
Mulled wine,
Chocolate treats and time, time, time...

Time to laze,
Time to read,
Time for friends and family,
And just a little time for me.

We’d love to read more of your poems. If you have something that you’d like to share about your local area, please send it to voices@nationwide.co.uk and we might feature it on the website.

This is the latest in our series of monthly poems, previous poems include 'When I want good help today' by Nick Matthews, ‘The Veteran Player’ by Victoria White and ‘Weithie, sdim isie geirie’ by Aneirin Karadog and Eurig Salisbury.
