My wife, Jackie, was only 57 when she died. We’d been together since school.
I just felt empty, useless, without her. She’d always said towards the end that she wanted me to meet someone else and start again. But how do you meet new people at my age? Apparently, it all happens online now, so I joined this dating website.
And that’s when I met Ana. She lived alone in Bolton, but her family lived abroad. We used to chat a lot, online, via this dating website. All very above board.
Then one day she wrote that she really liked me, but she wanted to hear my voice and have a real conversation with me. So, I gave her my number, she phoned me and we talked and laughed and I really thought she was the one. She said we were like a couple of lovebirds.
Then one day she called me in a panic saying her mother was very ill and that in her country you had to pay upfront for healthcare and then get it reimbursed and could I help?
Well, I wanted to help so I gave her the money. Then it was more serious and there was a lifesaving operation and she needed more money. Then there was medication and a wheelchair. It was all adding up.
Then my savings ran out.
And I never heard from her again.
