Nationwide’s poem of the month for July

At Nationwide, we believe it’s important that our members speak up for what matters to them. It’s a vital part of building society together. And it’s one of the inspirations behind our latest TV advertising campaign.

We also love to hear from budding poets or writers that have been inspired to share their own poems with us. So each month, we’ll bring you a new example of the many poems we’ve received.

The poem featured this month is called ‘Picturesque Land’ and was sent in by Julian Amos. We think it conjures images of the beautiful landscape of Britain as well as it’s thriving indigenous nature and historic buildings. You could say its paints a lovely picture of Britain as the ideal holiday option through the summer months.

Picturesque Land by Julian Amos

It’s a wonderful place
This country of ours
If you know where to look
And can spare a few hours

Of villages quaint
Thatched cottages in pink paint
Cobbled streets - five bar gates
China tea cups and plates

If you’ve a love of trees, gardens and flowers
Arboretums and picturesque towers
Castles with stone walls, well-built and strong
In our country, you’ll not go far wrong

Through high woods thickly grown
Woodpecker’s morse-code is thrown
And through the valleys softly set
Wandering rivers do roam

If you know where to look
If you know where to go
If you can open your eyes
If you can let your heart grow

Unspoilt land here abounds
Places your grandparents would remember
Pleasant holiday destinations
At least, from May till September

We’d love to read more of your poems. If you have something that you’d like to share please send it to voices@nationwide.co.uk, and we might feature it on the website.
