We’re committed to building society, nationwide

At Nationwide we want to build a better society with the help of our members and their communities. That's because we're not a bank, we're a building society, founded by our members. And helping local communities is at the heart of being a building society.

In fact, to this day, members still have a say in the decisions we take and keep us true to our values. In 2007, it was our members who decided that at least one per cent of our pre-tax profits should be donated to good causes.

We donate a quarter of this money to the Nationwide Foundation*, an independent charity set up 20 years ago to fund charitable causes and help improve the lives of people in need across the UK.

And from 2012 until recently, the rest has been invested on an ambitious five-year social investment programme called Living on your side.

We started Living on your side after asking members what they thought we should do to make a positive and lasting difference to their communities. Their direction was clear - focus on the areas where we have the most expertise and can make the biggest impact: housing, money management and supporting local communities.

April 2017 brought us to the end of this amazing five-year journey, and we're happy to say that we've done even more than we hoped.

Helping people into a home of their own

helping shelter

As part of Living on your side, we wanted to help 750,000 people into a home of their own. It’s not just about buying a house, it is also about having a safe and comfortable place to call home, whether it is owned or rented privately.

We’re pleased to say that we’ve helped almost one million people! To achieve this we worked with a number of charity partners that help vulnerable people into their own homes, such as the housing and homeless charity Shelter and the Elderly Accommodation Counsel.

“Over the last five years, we’ve directly helped thousands of people in housing need through Nationwide’s funding of our family support services and national helpline. Nationwide colleagues have organised fundraising activities, volunteering at our services and generating stock for our Shelter shops. We’ve also formed a strategic alignment to make a positive impact on the current housing crisis, working together to share insight and influence change”. Amy Morgan, Shelter.

Inspiring people to start saving

As one of the UK’s largest savings providers, we play an important role in encouraging a savings culture.

Our aim was to share financial know-how to help people develop good saving and spending habits. And over the 5 year project we empowered 1.2 million people to start saving.

Supporting local causes

We've helped more than 4,000 local causes, channelling more than £21 million into local communities. Including setting up a Specialist Support Service with Macmillan Cancer Support for members living with cancer.

“Nationwide has made an incredible difference for people affected by cancer. Some key highlights over the past five years include the development of the Specialist Support Service and the continued support for our World’s Biggest Coffee Morning". Leyla Onal, Macmillan Cancer Support.

We also worked in partnership with the British Heart Foundation to help 4,000 Nationwide staff become trained in CPR and planted trees alongside the Woodland Trust, to create woodlands for generations to come.

Staying committed to doing the right thing

We're really happy with what we've achieved through Living on your side, but there's so much more we could do. As always, it's our members who decide what we should do next.

After listening to members' feedback, we're building on our experience and looking at how we could help bring local solutions to national housing problems. We'll keep working to make bring lasting differences to local communities. And this year we’re launching a programme to make this happen.

Everything we do is thanks to our members and their commitment to helping local communities.
