How to apply for a Community Grant

Have you got an innovative idea to tackle housing problems in your local community but need some funding? Here’s how we could help.

What you need to know

Is your project one we’re likely to support? If you think it might be, download the eligibility criteria for the full picture.

What we’ll fund

Projects need to either prevent people from being homeless, help people into a home or support people to remain in their home. There are grants of up to £50,000 available.

Who can apply?

We’re inviting charities, social enterprises, not-for-profits and similar organisations that are a UK registered charity to apply – either alone or as part of a joint bid. There are some exclusions, like political or profit-making activities, but these are explained fully in the the eligibility criteria.

Application deadline

Applications are now open until 5pm on Friday 13 April for the following regions:

  • Scotland
  • Wales
  • Northern Ireland
  • Shropshire
  • Herefordshire
  • Worcestershire
  • Gloucestershire
  • West Midlands

Shortlists will be announced in June and successful applicants will be contacted in July.

How to apply

First, be sure your region is taking applications – see above. Next, read through the eligibility criteria in detail, making sure you have all the required supporting documents ready to upload. Once you’re all set, hit Apply now – this will take you to an online application form hosted by UK Community Foundations. They are the national network for all accredited Community Foundations across the UK and are helping us deliver this grant funding programme.

What next?

Once you’ve submitted your application it’ll be assessed, possibly with a phone call or visit from our partner, UK Community Foundations. All suitable projects will then be passed to the Community Board for your local area. They’ll compile a shortlist of the best projects – then it’s down to members to vote for which projects get our funding and support.

If you've got a question about our Community Grants, we'd love to hear from you.

Who we currently work with

Nationwide Foundation

The Nationwide Foundation

An independent charity set up 20 years ago. Its vision is for everyone in the UK to have access to a decent, affordable home. The Foundation has so far awarded more than £32 million to over 3,000 charitable causes.

We’ve been working with Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity, for the last 17 years. Every year they help millions of people struggling with bad housing and homelessness, providing them with advice, support and legal services.

Elderly Accommodation Counsel

Elderly Accommodation Counsel

A national charity helping older people make informed choices about their housing and care needs. Nationwide has been supporting its ‘Live Safely and Well at Home' campaign, as well as its UK telephone advice service, enabling thousands of older people to stay on in their own homes.
