Nationwide Director to become new Chairman of P20

19 July 2019

Nationwide Building Society’s Director of Payments, John Hutton, is to become the new Chairman of the global payments body, P20. John, who is currently Vice-Chairman, will take up his new role following the conclusion of P20’s annual Global Payment Conference, which takes place in London in October. He will succeed Bruce Lowthers, Global COO for FIS, as Chairman for a term of two years.

John’s responsibilities will include chairing the Board, setting the Board agenda and supporting the P20 organisation and its members to drive the best outcomes on key focus areas such as payment regulations and financial inclusion.

John joined Nationwide in June 2016 from Barclays where he held a number of senior roles most notably Director of Payments, UK & Europe and Director of Payments with Absa Bank – part of the Barclays Africa group.

Within Nationwide John has full accountability for Payments, developing the Society’s Payments Strategy as well as leading Payments Technology, Change, Operations, and Payment Services teams.

P20 is a global payments association, whose members are the world’s leading payment companies, banks and building societies, government legislators and financial regulators. Identifying areas of common concern in the fields of regulation, cybersecurity, financial inclusion and education, members of the P20 use their collective expertise to guide and implement change that improves the effectiveness of the global payments industry.

John Hutton comments: “It’s a real honour to be taking over as Chairman of P20, especially from such a global leader in Payments as Bruce Lowthers, who has done a fantastic job over the past years. The pillars of regulation, cybersecurity and financial inclusion will continue to remain core to P20’s focus, alongside bringing in new countries and institutions who wish to be part of a leading global payments initiative.

Duncan Sandys, Executive Director P20: “I'm delighted to welcome John Hutton as the new Chairman of P20 when Bruce Lowthers steps down this October. John’s many years of experience across the payments industry means he is perfectly positioned to continue the P20 mission of creating a stronger, more robust and inclusive global payments ecosystem.”

Peter Radcliffe, P20 Conference Chairman: “I'm pleased to welcome John Hutton as the new Chairman of P20. I am very much looking forward to working closely with John to progress and build on the important work that P20 has done over the past three years.”
