Social investment

Improving communities is at the heart of everything we do. Our vision is for everyone to have a place fit to call home. To help make this happen we have 3 key priorities:

  • preventing people from losing their home

  • help get people into a home

  • enable people to thrive in their home environment

The difference we made last year

Our members voted in 2007 to donate at least 1% of our pre-tax profits to charities. In the 2022/23 financial year, this came to £9.6 million.

  1. £2.4 million went to the Nationwide Foundation

Each year 25% of our funding goes to the Nationwide Foundation, an independent charity focused on decent, affordable housing.

  2. £4.3 million was given to community grants

We committed to give UK charities £22 million over 5 years. And in this time we've helped 540 charities.

  1. £1.2 million was donated to our partner, Shelter

This is the largest amount we’ve given in a year since we started working together in 2001. It’s helped more than 31,000 people impacted by the housing crisis this year.

  2. Colleagues and customers raised and donated £1.6 million

Our colleagues are given up to 14 hours of work time each year to volunteer in their local communities.

Our not-for-profit, community-focused development is providing 239 energy efficient homes.

Supporting charities

We work closely with housing charity Shelter. And we encourage our people to volunteer and fundraise for causes they believe in too.

The Nationwide Foundation

The Nationwide Foundation is an independent charity creating lasting change to tackle disadvantage in the UK. Its vision is for everyone to have a decent home that they can afford. The Nationwide Foundation is supported by an annual donation from us and so far has awarded over £38 million to more than 3,000 UK charitable causes.
