Find out how to close a Nationwide account.

To stop receiving correspondence from us, your account has to be closed. We will still send statements, cards and interest adjustments to you even if your balance is zero.

You can close your account in one of the following ways:

  • Complete and print a form via the Internet Bank, and either post it to us or hand your form into a branch.
  • If you don't bank online, you can visit a branch.

Note: If you're closing an account that's linked to an e-product, you'll need to close the e-product first - see below for how to do this. 

To close your account online

To print a form online to request to close your account:


  1. Log in to the Internet Bank
  2. Select the View accounts tab located at the top of the page
  3. Select the account you want to close
  4. Select Other account services from the View accounts menu on the left side of the page
  5. From the Account services section, select Close Account
  6. Follow the the on-screen instructions to complete the form.

We will post any money left in the account by cheque to your registered address within two working days upon receipt of your form. 

Note: If you are signed up to use Paym, you'll automatically be de-registered from Paym when your account is closed.

Please visit a branch, taking with you:

  • any outstanding items (cards, cheque books), and
  • your passport or driving licence as proof of identity.

To close your account please call Credit Card Services on 08000 55 66 11. We're open 8.00am -10.00pm Monday to Friday, 8.00am - 8.00pm Saturday, and 9am - 5pm Sundays.

You can close your account in one of the following ways:

  • you can close your account online via the Internet Bank, or
  • if you don't bank online, you can visit a branch.

To close your account online

  1. Log in to the Internet Bank
  2. Click on My Messages link located at the top of the page 
  3. Click Compose new message and choose the following options:
    1. Step 1: select Manage my savings account
    2. Step 2: select None of the above accounts
    3. Step 3: select How to close
    4. Continue
    5. Then please provide the following information in the free-format Compose new message box:
      1. The text The last 4 digits of the account I wish to close are XXXX. (where XXXX are the last 4 digits of the account you are closing), and
      2. EITHER the text:
        Please transfer the remaining funds in my account (including interest) to my Nationwide account ending XXXX. (where XXXX are the last 4 digits of the account you wish to transfer to),
        OR the text:
        Please send me a cheque for the remaining funds in my account (including interest).

Once your instruction is received, your account will be closed within 3 working days.

Please note that we are currently unable to transfer to a non-Nationwide account.

Please visit a branch, taking with you:

  • the relevant passbook (if you've been issued one), and
  • your passport or driving licence as proof of identity.

You can close your account online.

To close your e-product:


  1. Log in to the Internet Bank
  2. Select View accounts - tab located at the top of the page
  3. Select the account you want to close
  4. Select Other account services - from the View accounts menu on the left side of the page
  5. Find Account services
  6. Select the link Close account
  7. Continue to follow the on screen instructions.

You'll need to make a withdrawal to bring your account below the minimum balance of £1. You'll then automatically be asked if you would like to close your account, if you select yes, the funds will be transferred to your nominated account for closure.
