Close your savings account

To close your account select your account type below and then choose from the options.  For security reasons, we can't close accounts over the phone.

If your savings account no longer meets your needs it's easy to switch, we have a range of savings accounts available.

Does your account have a card or a passbook?

You'll need to complete and print a form online

  1. Log in to your Internet Bank
  2. Select 'View accounts'
  3. Choose your account
  4. Select 'Other account services' (left of your screen)
  5. Select 'Close account'
  6. Complete, print and post your form to us. 

What happens next

Once we've received your instruction, your account will be closed within 3 working days. If you decide to receive the remaining balance by cheque, we'll send this by post to your registered address. You can check if your address is up-to-date online

There are 2 ways to close your account

1. Send us a message

If you bank online you can send us a secure message. You must include, the last 4 digits of your account and tell us how you want to receive the remaining balance, for example:


  • Please transfer the remaining balance (including interest) into my Nationwide account ending [enter the last 4 digits of your account number here].
  • Please send me a cheque for the remaining balance (including interest).
2. Visit us in branch

When you visit us in branch to close your account, you'll need to bring either your passport or driving licence as proof of identity and any account cards, passbooks or certificates.

What happens next

Once we've received your instruction, your account will be closed within 3 working days. If you decide to receive the remaining balance by cheque, we'll send this by post to your registered address. You can check if your address is up-to-date online
