System

Your operating system (e.g. Windows XP) is the program which makes everything else on your computer work. Because it is critical to the operation of your PC and everything that runs on it, it is important to keep it up to date.

Why do I need to keep my operating system up to date?

  • from time to time shortcomings are identified in these programs by the software vendor (e.g. Microsoft)
  • these shortcomings can vary from a minor glitch to a serious vulnerability that leaves your PC open to attack from hackers
  • to correct this the software vendor will issue a patch to the operating system that will fix the problem and for more serious vulnerabilities close the door to hackers
  • it is therefore important to check the vendor's website regularly for updates
  • the update process is usually simple and straightforward, just visit the web site of the company that provides your operating system, check for patches and updates and follow the on site instructions
  • if you're using Microsoft software, you can do this by visiting their website http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.mspx. Or, if you are a Mac user, you can visit http://www.apple.com/uk/support/
