Smart account - how to open an account
It's easy to open one of our great value Smart accounts.
If you're 11 or over, you can open a Smart cash card account online. Smart accounts can be viewed on the Internet Bank.
or you can:
- apply at your branch - to find your nearest branch use our branch finder
- order a leaflet and complete an application form
For children under the age of seven, an adult needs to be the named account holder. Make sure you bring at least £1 to open the account, plus the appropriate identification (you can find out what we accept here).
How to register Smart for Internet Banking
You will need to Register here, complete the form and click on the Register Your Details button.
Smart account details can be viewed on Nationwide's Internet Banking site by the account holder when they register for Nationwide's Internet Banking Service. Please note, if the account is held in an adult's name on behalf of a child then only the adult will be able to view the account. If the Smart account is held in a child's name, only the child will be able to view the account.
You will receive your customer number and pass number within three working days after which, you will be able to sign on and use Internet Banking.
The Internet Bank displays information for both card and passbook versions of the account. However only card based Smart accounts can make transactions online, passbook transactions still need to be made at a branch.
