Type of help Where to look
Student finance

You can find lots of information about student loans, maintenance grants and bursaries at:

direct.gov.uk for England
studentfinanceni.co.uk for Northern Ireland
student-support-saas.gov.uk for Scotland
studentfinancewales.co.uk for Wales.

And don’t forget to apply in good time. You don’t have to wait until your son or daughter has got a confirmed place.

Student accommodation

There are lots and lots of sites online, some covering the UK, some specific to particular cities and towns. For halls of residence check out your child’s university or college website. Your child’s university or college may also have a list of private student accommodation for rent. The Office of Fair Trading’s leaflet highlights some of the pitfalls consumers may come across when entering into a tenancy agreement. You can get this by phoning

General student matters

The National Union of Students is the official student body. Find them at nusonline.co.uk

Gap year

For gap years with a conscience, go to the VSO site at vso.org.uk, but there’s an enormous number of options out there. It’s worth doing some research because there is growing concern at the rising costs and limited use of some trips.
