Nationwide Building Society's Guildfordi retail branch has been awarded a Gold Ska Rating by RICS – highlighting its top environmental credentials. This is Nationwide's second Gold Ska Rating, having been awarded this rating for its Oxford pilot, while the Threadneedle Street (London) branch is in line to receive the same award in the near futureii. The Society is committed to achieving more Ska ratings for future refurbishments and continues to be the only financial services provider and only one of two brandsiii with a Gold Ska Rating for retail fit-outs.
Operated by RICS, Ska Rating is an environmental assessment tool for sustainable fit-outs and enables companies to measure the environmental performance of an office or retail fit-out. Ska comprises a number of 'good practice' measures covering energy and CO2 emissions, waste, water, materials, pollution, wellbeing and transport. Nationwide's Guildford branch met a total of 65 measures, achieving a score of 74.71% to earn the Gold Ska rating.
Chris Shott, Head of Property & Corporate Services at Nationwide, said: "To achieve Gold, we engaged with our suppliers early on during the design of the branch and targeted the highest standard of sustainability. This is just the beginning; we're aiming to get more Ska ratings and we will be using the Guildford branch as a template for future fit-outs. We're really pleased with the result and strongly believe our employees and members will like the re-fitted branch."
Tim Robinson, Director of Information Products at RICS, said: "Nationwide have gain demonstrated their commitment to embracing leadership levels of good practice in sustainable fit-out using Ska Rating."
Sustainability goes hand-in-hand with Nationwide and, as a mutual, it recognises its impact on the communities and environments in which it operates. The Society has a bold vision to be one of the leading performers of environmental sustainability in UK financial services and has set some challenging targets:
