Nationwide Building Society is to pilot an electric bike scheme as part of its Cycling Awareness Day on Tuesday 8th October 2013 at its headquarters at Pipers Way, Swindon.
There will be electric bikes from three local suppliers for employees to trial and give feedback on, with the aim of introducing 20 for inter-office travel in Swindon by January 2014. The electric bikes used during the trial are from two Swindon suppliers, Mitchells Cycles and E-Motion.
Nationwide has several offices in Swindon, with most of the inter-office travel between Nationwide House and Wakefield House, which are at opposite ends of Pipers Way and about one mile apart. Currently Nationwide offers employees a shuttle bus service between the two, but the introduction of electric bikes will give employees greater flexibility around their travel and promotes Nationwide's green agenda. This follows on from the Society's current trial of BMW's electric ActiveE cars for employees to use for short-distance travel.
To help employees get on the saddle, there will also be guided cycle tours led by the Nationwide Cycle Club. Debra Bailey, Director of Group Services, and Rudolf Heaf, Head of Customer Service Banking, will join the tour on a tandem bike. The theme of the day is to promoting cycling to work, with free cycle services provided by Swindon-based Doctor Bike.
Debra Bailey, Nationwide's Group Services Director, said: "Nationwide has previously introduced a number of electric cars for employee use, and the electric bike project will be another step forward in the Society's commitment to building a sustainable business. The project will benefit Nationwide employees who need to travel between our Swindon offices, providing them with greater flexibility in their work patterns."
