At Nationwide’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), held today at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London, the votes of over one million Nationwide members helped to raise £201,744 for its chosen charity, Macmillan Cancer Support. The Society will also make a further donation of 20p for every member who agreed to receive future AGM mailing packs electronically and over 125,000 people have selected this option. The full amount raised for the charity through this second donation will be known in the next few weeks.

Commenting on the vote, Geoffrey Howe, Nationwide’s chairman, said: “In voting, members have helped raise over £200,000 for our flagship charity, Macmillan Cancer Support. The money will be used to help fund Welfare Benefits Advisors based at Citizens Advice Bureaux in Coventry and Grampian, which will make a real difference to many people’s lives.

“Members have also shown their support for the Society and our directors who, I believe, have the skills and experience to lead Nationwide to further success in the future.”

Nationwide board changes
David Rigney, executive director stood down from the Board as planned, on 21 July 2010 and non-executive directors Stella David and Derek Ross retired from the Board on 22 July 2010, having completed their full terms on the Board. At the AGM Geoffrey Howe thanked all three retiring directors for their contribution to Nationwide over a number of years.

Notes to editors:

  • Nationwide pledged that, for every member voting in the 2010 AGM, it would pay 20p to Macmillan Cancer Support, subject to a maximum of £250,000.
  • The Society also pledged to donate a further 20p to the charity for every member who agreed to receive their 2011 AGM pack electronically. We already know from early results that this will be at least £25,000 and the total raised for Macmillan by this means will be known in August.
