Green electricity

Have you ever stopped to think where your electricity comes from?

In the UK nearly three quarters of our electricity is generated by burning coal and gas, releasing millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The remainder is produced mostly from nuclear power. Only a small proportion (4.2%) of our electricity is green which means it is generated from renewable sources that have less of an impact on the environment, such as biofuels, wind and solar power.

You can support the growth of renewable energy by changing your supplier to a green electricity provider and making the switch is easier than you think.

Did you know, wind is the world's fastest growing energy source and in the UK we're lucky enough to have around 40% of Europe's wind resourceSwitching to green electricity

As more people demand green electricity, more will be supplied by renewable means and the general thought is that the more we use, the cheaper it will become in the future. There are a growing number of green electricity providers, including the large household suppliers.

Currently, all Nationwide's buildings are powered by electricity from renewable sources and this will be reviewed on a continuous basis. To learn more about Nationwide's energy usage visit www.nationwide.co.uk/bettersociety/environment/energy.
