Energy efficient appliances

If you're buying a new electrical appliance make sure you check its environmental credentials. Energy efficient appliances are usually no more expensive and in the long run will save you money on running costs.

There is an energy labelling scheme for all refrigeration and laundry appliances, dishwashers, electric ovens and light bulbs that identifies the energy efficiency of the appliance; showing estimated energy consumption and grading the efficiency from A to G (A++ to G for cold appliances). An A-rated appliance, for example, will use about half the electricity of an appliance rated G.

The amount of electricity an appliance consumes will depend upon how it is used and where it is located. For example, a half-full fridge or freezer uses more energy than a full one; and it will also use more energy if it is placed next to a heater or oven.

The Energy Saving Trust endorses products of proven energy efficiency. Look out for their logo to be guaranteed that a product will save energy, cost less to run and help the environment.

The Energy Star logo shows that an appliance's energy consumption whilst in 'stand-by' mode is below a previously agreed level, reducing its running cost.

Did you know, if everyone boiled only the water they needed instead of 'filling' the kettle every time, we could save enough electricity to run nearly half of the street lighting in the U.K Boilers account for around 60% of all domestic carbon dioxide emissions so it is a good idea to ensure yours is as efficient as possible. If a boiler is more than 15 years old, replacing it with a new model can reduce your heating cost by over 20% depending on the type of boiler you install.
