Some people are reluctant to switch their current account because they think it will be a hassle. However, thanks to the Current Account Switch Service, it’s never been easier.

We’ll take care of the whole process from start to finish, and because the Current Account Switch Service is backed by the Current Account Switch Guarantee, you can rest assured we’ll:


  • transfer your balance to the new account
  • move any Direct Debits, standing orders and bill payments across
  • make arrangements for any regular payments, e.g. your salary, to be made into your new account
  • complete the switch in 7 working days.

You can choose what day you want the switch to take effect. To get the process started, you’ll just need to give us:


  • the name of your current bank or building society
  • your sort code
  • your account number
  • contact details, so we can keep you updated on progress.

We’ll get the rest of the information we need, including a list of your Direct Debits, standing orders and bill payments, from your old bank or building society.

Expecting some payments to your old account? Don’t worry, we’ll make sure they are automatically redirected to your new account.

Things to be aware of


  • you won't be able to switch from a joint account to a sole account using the Current Account Switch Service.
  • if you use this Service your existing account will be closed.

Switching to a new Nationwide account

  • There are more than 65 million active personal current accounts in the UK. In ancient Greece and Rome, temples acted as banks, loaning money out as well as keeping it safe.
  • Current accounts as we know them, now have their roots in 16th century Amsterdam. Cashiers started charging customers for depositing their money and valuables for safekeeping.
  • The first overdraft dates back to 1778, when a merchant, William Hoag was allowed to take £1,000 more out of his account than he had. In today’s money, that’s around £63,664.

If your current bank or building society does not use the Current Account Switch Service (CASS) you can still move your current account to us but your Switch will not be covered by the Current Account Switch Service Guarantee. If you’re not sure whether your current bank or building society is part of CASS you can ask us when you start your switch. What if something goes wrong?

Your switch is backed by the Current Account Switch Guarantee. In the unlikely event that something goes wrong with your switch, the new provider will refund any interest or charges incurred on your old or new account as a result.
