Helping families for generations

At Nationwide we’ve always tried to offer support to our customers at every stage of their lives, from opening their first bank account to taking out a mortgage and beyond.

Noreen Greenacre

One family we’ve certainly been able to do this for is Noreen Greenacre’s. Noreen contacted us after our Generations advert struck a chord with her and she realised her family have been banking with us for 3 generations.

Her parents became Nationwide customers over 30 years ago and Noreen and her husband soon followed their lead and ditched their high street banks in favour of a Nationwide current account.

A few years later they opened a savings account for their daughter and then their son, who enjoyed using the children’s play area at the Woking branch when they visited to deposit their Christmas and birthday cheques.

Since then it’s fair to say that Noreen and her family have made use of almost every service we offer from mortgages to current accounts. But Noreen says that the most valuable product they signed up for was life cover, which they took out when switching mortgages in the mid-90s. It proved invaluable when Noreen’s husband sadly passed away in 2000, allowing her to pay off their mortgage which helped to secure her family’s financial future.

“If we hadn’t had such good advice from Nationwide, our lives could have been very different,” Noreen says.

Today, Noreen and her second husband have a FlexPlus current account, after she convinced him all the extras made it worth switching. Online and mobile banking make it easier to manage their finances from Germany, where they spend much of the year. Her two children, who used the cash in their Nationwide savings accounts to buy cars as soon as they passed their tests, have both held FlexAccounts. In fact, Noreen’s son Jack even works for Nationwide and has received the Surrey and Sussex Trusted Advisor Award by Nationwide.

Why Nationwide?

For Noreen the fact that Nationwide have remained a building society when other mutuals were switching to new business models is a key reason why she trusts us with her finances.

“I admired Nationwide for sticking it out – we don’t really have many building societies left now. I’ve always trusted them – to me they are a trusted brand and have always been dependable.

“I’m not sure what the future will hold for me but, as my son met his partner at work in the Crawley branch where he is based, Nationwide might even be responsible for my future grandchildren!” says Noreen. “I just know I will always, always be grateful to have had Nationwide in my life.”
