Supporting people living with cancer

Almost everyone knows someone who’s been affected by cancer and indeed one in three of us will go on to face the condition. There are currently 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK and this number is set to rise to 4 million in 2030.

This is a condition that affects so many people, which is why we’ve supported Macmillan Cancer Support for 22 years. Altogether, our employees and members have raised an incredible £7.1 million in that time.

And every year our employees and members raise a good slice of that money by taking part in Macmillan’s famous ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’. This year, it was held on Friday 25th and here at Nationwide, lots of us held a Coffee Morning across many of our branches and offices across the UK.

So what have we done?

To mark our achievement and to celebrate in the spirit of Coffee Morning, our employees and members joined forces and broke a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest cream tea party at our head office in Swindon.

Before our attempt, the world record for the world’s largest cream tea party stood at 536 but together with our employees and local members, we broke the record with a total of 691 people. Have a look at our video to see what happened on the day.

And elsewhere in the country?

Employees in our branches and offices across the rest of the UK also did their part by holding their own Coffee Mornings to raise as much money as possible.

Over the years all those hot drinks and pieces of cake have certainly helped raise vital funds for people affected by cancer. Cancer can have an impact on more than people’s health – it can also impact their finances and wellbeing. That’s where the money our employees and members have raised has made a huge difference.

The importance of practical advice and financial support

When you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, the last thing you need is money worries. The services we’ve helped fund, with the donations our members and employees have made, all go towards helping those struggling with the practical implications and financial impact of cancer.

Since 1993, we’ve helped fund two cancer information centres and welfare benefits advisers in five regions of the UK. More recently, we’ve also helped fund the Macmillan Support Line  and the provision of grants to help people living with cancer with their mortgage and rental payments.

This year, we also began working with Macmillan to launch our own Specialist Support Service for Nationwide members affected by cancer, a first for the financial services sector.

Our new service is designed to provide free, tailored and confidential support. Each member of our branch teams have received training from Macmillan about how to communicate with people affected by cancer and the type of circumstances they might face. As well as having the knowledge from our own training, on Nationwide’s products and services. It’s a way of ensuring that our members don’t have to face cancer or its financial consequences on their own.
