Free events and activities this Christmas

Keeping an eye on your purse strings this Christmas? That doesn’t mean you can’t go out and have fun with the family. We’ve dug out some of the best free family events this festive season.

Reindeer-petting, Covent Garden, London

Covent Garden’s Piazza is welcoming 2 reindeer – Cracker and Tinkerbell – this Christmas, so head on down with the little ones to see them before they head off to pull Santa’s sleigh.

Cracker and Tinkerbell will be at Covent Garden every Saturday right up to Christmas, between 12 noon and 4pm. Covent Garden website; call 020 7420 5856.

Christmas Art Competition, National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh

The National Museum of Scotland is once again running its popular Christmas ‘Crafternoons’ on weekends throughout December. Designed for all the family, simply turn up and have a wander around the museum. If you're feeling inspired by the collections, you can even make your own Christmas decoration to take home with you.

The museum’s Crafternoons run on December 6th, 7th, 13th and 14th 27th – 30th, 10.30am-6.30pm. National Museum of Scotland website; call 0300 123 6789 for enquiries.

Christmas nativity plays, Plymouth

Plymouth’s Piazza will host a series of nativity plays this Christmas – all performed by children from local primary schools and members of church groups. Put on your winter coat and head into town to enjoy.

The nativity plays will be performed on December 17th-20th. For enquiries call Plymouth Tourist Information on 01752 306330.

German Christmas Market, Bristol

This year’s market will feature nearly 40 chalets, a nativity pyramid, giant advent calendar and of course, beer halls. Pick up some unique Christmas gifts, enjoy a warming hot toddy and sample some German food.

Christmas crafts, Belfast

Head to Belfast’s Learning Space centre for this fun arts and crafts session. You and the kids, together with the help of some elves, can make some Christmas creations to decorate your tree.

The craft sessions run every Saturday in December. See Learning Space website for details, or call 02890 319360.
