Thank you for supporting Shelter this Christmas

2 minute read

  • 100,000 children will be homeless on Christmas Day
  • Nationwide has been working with Shelter for 14 years and employees have raised £3.2 million
  • Last year Shelter received 450,000 calls to their helpline and without Nationwide’s support thousands would have gone unanswered

Nadeem Khan, Helpline Adviser at Shelter, tells us why your support for Shelter is so important at this time of the year.

Christmas is a wonderful time of year for most of us – I for one enjoy spending time with my friends and family and joining in with all sorts of festivities. Unfortunately for some, this isn’t the case. For instance, did you know that 100,000 children in Britain will be homeless on Christmas day? A child’s Christmas should be exciting, about eating too much, playing games with family and wondering if they’ll see the presents they wished for under the tree. But thousands of children might not even have room for a tree, let alone space to sit around a table for Christmas dinner. You might not see them on the streets, but they’re still homeless and living in places such as hostels and B&Bs.

We’ve been working together with Nationwide for over 14 years because we both passionately believe that absolutely everyone has the right to have a secure and affordable place to call ‘home’.

“Over the years, Nationwide employees and members have raised an incredible £3.2 million.”

This has gone towards providing our free advice helpline and supporting our face to face intensive services across the country. Last year we received 450,000 calls to our helpline and without the donations from Nationwide, thousands of these calls would’ve gone unanswered.

I’d like to thank all of the Nationwide employees and customers who have given us their time - participating in our recent Christmas Slippers for Shelter campaign, running marathons and volunteering in our shops, for example. The money raised has all helped us make sure no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness alone.

Every day we speak to people who face losing the roof over their family’s heads. Hearing the worry in a parent’s voice doesn’t get any easier, and sadly more and more people are coming to us every day, desperate for support. It’s heart-breaking to imagine someone facing homelessness with nowhere to turn, but your donations can help us to be there for everyone who needs us, so thank you so much for your support.
