Other impact areas

As well as the key impact areas described earlier in this section, we also monitor emissions to air and water use, and also encourage biodiversity around our sites.

Emissions to air

In 2006, we stated our intention to report on all emissions to air from our head office: see data table.

Water use

Water consumption continues to show a steady increase, partly due to higher employee numbers and an increasing focus on health and wellbeing. Climate change may also be a factor.

To help control consumption we now have 92% of our water supply accounts on meters, which is the maximum level of metering we can achieve at this time due to building and water supplier constraints.

Biodiversity

Although we are not a major landowner and do not operate any sites of special scientific interest, we support biodiversity on our sites. We manage the land around our offices in ways that safeguard plant life and wildlife and provide information for employees on getting involved with improving biodiversity. We support the Schools Biodiversity Programme.

In the Spring of 2007 we added to the diversity of the woodland at our head office in Swindon by planting 500 trees and shrubs, including British native species.
