Our people strategy

Our strategy is founded on the belief that by nurturing a workplace culture that rewards excellence and promotes respect, employees in turn demonstrate their commitment in ways that make a measurable difference to the bottom line. We call our values PRIDE.

PRIDE values

PRIDE stands for:

Putting members first
Rising to the challenge
Inspiring confidence
Delivering best value
Exceeding expectations

PRIDE is visible at every level of the organisation and is integral to performance appraisal. Our annual employee awards also celebrate employees who go the extra mile.

Ashu Gai - Employee of the Year 2006Employee of the Year 2006, Ashu Gai, mans the Nationwide phone lines for Comic Relief. Ashu, a senior branch manager, was recognised for his 'can do' approach, a passion for innovation and for providing genuine support and motivation to his team. Ten other worthy finalists were chosen from over 140 nominations from colleagues.

Nationwide's ongoing research (see diagram) has demonstrated the link between committed employees and sustainable growth and is providing quantified results which can be translated into business performance.

PRIDE was recognised as a driving force behind Nationwide's business performance in the 2006 Human Capital awards sponsored by the Confederation of British Industry. Outgoing chief executive Philip Williamson also received the 'People's Champion' award.

Investors in People (IIP)

Since 1993, we have used the IIP standard to continuously improve our people management policies and strategies. Having achieved 'Champion' status in 2004 (the first financial institution and the largest of the 16 companies accredited at that time), we are aiming to achieve IIP Profile status by October 2008.
