Hot topics

Working towards a better society means looking beyond our own organisation and responding to issues that affect us all. Among these issues, the following ‘hot topics’ are key for Nationwide and our customers.

Climate change

windturbineClimate change has enormous social, economic and environmental implications. In 2007 the government announced its aim to achieve a CO2 emissions reduction of 60% by 2050. Nationwide has already reduced its own CO2 emissions by over 85% since 2005. We are also raising awareness among employees and members about tackling climate change through everyday actions and lifestyle choices. Read more about managing our carbon footprint.

A changing society

Two peopleOur population is ageing and there are now well over 1 million people aged 85 and over in the UK. Improved life expectancy is good news but has major implications for everyone’s personal finances in retirement. Social groupings have also become more diverse, with more households comprising single-parent families, which places greater pressure than ever before on housing provision. To help meet these challenges, Nationwide continues to develop fair, good value financial products.

A fair deal for consumers

People walking Financial services organisations have come under a great deal of scrutiny in recent years relating to bank charges and other issues. Nationwide has a strong track record in our commitment to free banking, responsible lending, customer service (in our wholly UK-based call centres and branches), accessible products and fair treatment. We believe that this is fundamental in helping to address financial exclusion and consumer debt. We also actively campaign on a number of issues where consumers are affected, from fighting for free cash machines to challenging unfairness in the tax regime.
