Nationwide Building Society will be amongst the first to offer its customers access to Android Pay, a new simple and secure way to pay, when it launches in the UK in the coming months. The Society’s customers will be able to use eligible Nationwide debit cards with Android Pay to make purchases within thousands of apps and pay for goods and services at almost 460,000 payment terminals across the country1.

Millions of Nationwide’s members are using its mobile banking apps, online services and paying with contactless cards across the country and supporting Android Pay is the latest in a number of innovative customer focused developments from the Building Society. These include the roll out of wearable technology, upgrades to its Mobile Banking App, including two innovative features – Quick Balance and Impulse Saver alongside the expansion of Nationwide Now as part of a £500 million investment in its branch network.

Tony Prestedge, Nationwide’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “Each month there are 19 million logins to our mobile banking app and our members make over 7 million contactless payments totalling £56 million. With Android Pay, Nationwide customers will have even greater choice in the way they purchase goods and services, highlighting the Society’s commitment to finding new innovative ways to help members manage their money at a time, in a place and in a way which suits them.”

Pali Bhat, Senior Director, Product Management, Google, said: “We're excited to bring the simplicity and security of mobile payments to Nationwide customers with Android Pay. Soon, people will be able to use their Android device to pay at almost 460,000 contactless payment terminals in the UK."

Nationwide has a long history of innovating to respond to the evolving needs of its members. In 2014, Nationwide became the first high street provider to offer customer service 24/7 with our @AskNationwide Twitter Team, in 1997 was first to offer internet banking in the UK and the Society will continue to invest in the next generation of online and mobile services.
