Harriett Baldwin MP opens new Nationwide branch in Victoria, London

Nationwide Building Society has opened a new branch in Victoria, underlining its commitment to invest £500 million in its branch network over the next five years. The newest branch to join Nationwide's network was officially opened today by Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Harriett Baldwin MP.

Graham Beale, Nationwide's Chief Executive, said: "We are delighted to welcome Harriett Baldwin to our new Victoria branch today and to be returning to the area. We think that reports of the death of the branch have been greatly exaggerated. Our members are telling us that they still want to be able to speak to someone face-to-face and that is why we are making a major investment in our branch network.

"We are transforming the look and feel of our branches so that they provide the right space and environment for members to discuss their financial affairs with our consultants, as well as providing the latest technology. With the addition of Nationwide NOW, we have the best service we have ever offered."

Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Harriett Baldwin MP, said: "I am delighted to see Nationwide using innovations in financial technology to broaden the services consumers can access when they visit their branch. The branch network is the face of a building society or bank in a local community, and Nationwide's investment combines the benefits of high-tech banking with those of having a real specialist you can speak to.

"Building societies and other mutuals are an essential part of a competitive and diverse financial services sector and so it's great to see Nationwide at the forefront of bringing the branch network into the 21st century."

The new branch offers customers a range of services and technology – facilities include:

  • More open plan customer seating areas for speaking with the team and six meeting rooms split across two floors for customers requiring face-to-face advice in private;
  • Nationwide NOW – the Society's pioneering service which gives customers access to a range of Nationwide financial consultants via a high definition video link. Two terminals are available; and
  • Three internal and two external ATMs which have a range of self-service functions.

Notes to Editors

Nationwide has returned to Victoria after the branch had to close in 2012 to make way for regeneration work.

When recently asked about the importance of the branch, nine in ten Nationwide customers said that there are some things they will always want to visit a branch for, and 89% said that they value face-to-face interactions in the branch. Additionally, 93% said that they appreciate companies who maintain the option of face-to-face interactions in an increasingly digital world1.
