Don’t risk a miserable Christmas - Make sure your presents are covered

Nationwide gives customers 10% boost on Home Insurance contents cover over Christmas

19 December 2014

With only five days until Christmas and gift shopping in full swing, Nationwide Building Society is advising people to check they are fully covered for the extra contents in their home over the festive period.

Nationwide research shows that more than £2701 worth of presents were kept under the tree or in the home last year for family members alone. But despite the added temporary value, many people will likely be too busy to stop and think about whether their policy needs updating, meaning they could well be risking losing out financially in the event of a festive catastrophe, such as an accident or burglary.

Nationwide’s home insurance policies, Home Insurance and Home Insurance Essentials, automatically increase contents cover by 10% for the 30 days each side of Christmas – covering off the period where most presents are bought, stored and frequently used.

Martyn Dyson, Nationwide’s Head of General Insurance, said: “Many of our customers will be in the throes of organising the perfect Christmas. That’s why our contents cover automatically increases over the festive period - to give our customers one less thing to worry about. Nationwide home insurance customers will receive 10% increased cover for the 30 days before Christmas and 30 days after. This applies not just at Christmas, but also over other religious festivals, birthdays and weddings.

“It’s important that people check their contents policy provides adequate cover, particularly at this time of year where hundreds of pounds are being spent on the latest gadgets and where common claims include broken fridge-freezers and accidental damage caused by family and pets.”

Nationwide offers two different insurance options. The Home Insurance policy includes personal possessions cover both in and out of the home and accidental damage as standard, along with accidental pet damage. The Home Insurance Essentials policy offers personal possessions cover and accidental damage as optional extras. Customers can also benefit from up to 35% no claims discount on contents, and up to 10% no claims discount on buildings insurance if they have been claim-free for up to five years.
