Early signs of Rugby World Cup fever as British fans spend average of £350 on tickets

Nationwide Building Society study shows 98 per cent of spend has gone onto credit cards as UK snaps up tickets

11 November 2014

Eagerness ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2015 has seen British fans securing an average of £350 worth of tickets following the initial sale and ballot, according to data released by Nationwide Building Society.

A Nationwide study into the spending of 2,500 customers who were successful getting tickets in the general sale and ballot highlighted the personal expense, based on a collective spend of £870,000.

While the initial public ticket sale ended at the end of September, funds have only recently left customers’ accounts following a hotly-contested ballot for the most popular games.

Ticket demand, combined with the cost, has driven more than 98 per cent of customers to buy tickets on their credit cards, according to the study. The biggest individual credit card spend on tickets was around £10,000, compared to £1,700 for a current account.

Based on the cheapest adult ticket for an England pool game costing £175 (England vs Uruguay), the £350 average spend would stretch to just two tickets for that game. Alternatively, Scotland offers the best value for a home nations’ pool match, with £350 enough to purchase five tickets for Scotland vs Japan or USA.

Rugby fans will get more chances to buy tickets during a second wave of ticket sales later this month. However, Nationwide is calling for fans to purchase through the official channels and avoid being duped by fake vendors.

Nationwide’s Head of Credit Cards, John Crossley, said: “The Rugby World Cup is going to be a momentous occasion for this country and it is no surprise that so many of us want to have a slice of the action. But given the level of spending and limited window, the credit card is an obvious way of paying for them.

“However fans decide to pay for their tickets, we would always recommend that they ensure they purchase through the official providers. A good deal is nearly always too good to be true for a world-class sporting event.”

Nationwide offers two credit cards - the Nationwide Select Credit Card and Nationwide Credit Card. Both offer 26-month interest free balance transfer periods (subject to 2.4% fee - minimum £5)1. Nationwide’s Select Credit Card provides interest free purchase for 15 months, as well as 0.5 per cent cashback on sterling purchases and unlimited commission-free purchases abroad2. Alternatively, customers can opt for a shorter 15-month balance transfer period (subject to 0.55% - minimum £5)4.

The Nationwide Credit Card offers an interest-free purchase offer period of three months, while customers are also rewarded with a commission-free allowance abroad, which accumulates whenever purchases are made in pounds sterling4. Customers also have the option to take out a 15-month balance transfer period (subject to 0.65% fee - minimum £5)4. Alternatively, for customers who do require an interest free balance transfer period, they can instead have a zero per cent offer on purchases for 15 months.
