Nationwide’s new app makes everyday spending more rewarding

The UK is a nation of bargain hunters with vouchers determining what people buy, and where they buy it

08 October 2014

Nationwide Building Society is launching its new Simply Rewards app, enabled by Visa, which gives instant rewards to its customers, anytime and anywhere in the palm of their hand. The introduction of the new app reflects a growing culture of bargain-hunting across the country. Nationwide’s research¹ found that around two fifths (39%) of people in the UK always search out a discount before making a purchase, whilst only 4% of those surveyed saying they were embarrassed to use a discount voucher.

Simply Rewards is a reward scheme that offers discounts ranging from little treats like eating out, everyday essentials such as the weekly grocery shop, through to seasonal expenditure such as keeping the children entertained during the holidays. The app features over a hundred offers from national and local brands, some of which will be exclusive to Nationwide Visa debit and credit card customers.

The Simply Rewards app introduces a range of innovative new features designed with the customer in mind. For example, the app allows customers to search for offers based on their location as well as by a range of categories, such as food, entertainment or travel. The app also displays prioritised offers to individual Nationwide customers based on their shopping spending history, allowing people to save both time and money and ensuring that the most relevant offers are easily accessible. There is no need to print off a voucher in order to redeem the offer, allowing customers to search for discounts on the move. Plus, customers can make restaurant reservations directly from the app.

The launch of the new app responds to evolving consumer attitudes towards the way people spend and save money. According to Nationwide’s research, 83% of people say that discounts/vouchers influence where they shop, whilst 78% say having a discount/voucher influences what they buy.

Chris Rhodes, Nationwide Executive Director, Group Retail, said: “Our research shows that vouchers and offers now play an important role in people’s spending behaviour, so we have introduced an innovative new way to help our customers find those deals and make their money go further.

“The Simply Rewards app is the latest example of how Nationwide rewards its existing customers. Not only does the app give our customers a wide range of discounts, from everyday favourites to exclusive offers, it also highlights the best offers based on how they are already spending their money.

“The next few months can be an expensive time for families with the half term holidays and Christmas fast approaching. With offers including money off weekly food shops, discounts on family days out, plus money off hotels, travel and holidays both in the UK and in Europe, we believe we will have offers to suit most people.”

The Simply Rewards app is available to download on both Apple and Android app stores.
