The number of Nationwide employees that have personally become actively involved in supporting local charities and good causes, both in and out of work time (through projects, skills exchanges, fundraising and volunteering) has rocketed from 6% in the year to 2012, to more than 30% this year.
The volunteering time, which benefited predominantly local community groups, was worth almost £400,000. This contribution was recognised in June, when Nationwide was awarded a Business in the Community Local Impact Award as Volunteering Company of the Year in the South West, having already been recognised to be in the nation’s Top 10 for employee involvement by the London Benchmarking Group.
Since launching its Citizenship programme ‘Living On Your Side’ in April 2012, Nationwide has exceeded all the first year targets it set itself, and in doing so has invested and unlocked more than £2.5 million to support local communities, assisted 175,000 people to start saving and supported over 168,000 into their own homes.
The strategy was the result of an initiative in 2011 that saw members, employees and key partners consulted on where they thought Nationwide citizenship activities should focus. Priorities of housing, money management and supporting local communities were identified, and ambitious targets set to focus activities over five years.
Stephen Uden, Head of Citizenship for Nationwide commented; “Over the past year citizenship at Nationwide has really grown in strength and scope. Whilst it has always been at the heart of our mutuality, this new strategy has seen the whole business really start to live and breathe citizenship and redouble our efforts and focus.
“‘Living On Your Side’ really isn’t rocket science; it’s about doing the right thing and working together to make a tangible difference. We are hoping these great results, little more than a year after the scheme was introduced, will encourage others to get involved with making a difference too.”
To supplement the publication of its recent Citizenship Report, Nationwide has produced three short films showcasing some of those positively affected by its Citizenship activity. These can be found at Your Money, Your Community and Your Home with further information available at our Living on Your Side website.
